Pre-Meeting Checklist for Language & Cultural Exchange
Use this checklist to guide your discussion and co-create a meaningful BRIDGE experience.
1. Connect with My Partner
- We've introduced ourselves and shared a bit about our background.
- We've shared our interests and hobbies.
- We've talked about our personalities (e.g. introverted/ extroverted, fast-paced/ deliberate).
2. Share Learning Expectations
- I've shared the language I'm learning and my current level (beginner/ intermediate/ advanced).
- I’ve explained which skills/ areas I want to focus on (e.g. pronunciation, fluency, listening, vocabulary range).
- I’ve asked about my partner’s goals and how I can support their learning.
- We’ve shared feedback preferences (e.g. gentle vs. direct, frequency of corrections).
3. Schedule Our Meetings
- We’ve agreed on a preferred format (face-to-face, video call, voice call).
- We’ve selected a location/platform that works for both of us (e.g. HKBU Learning Commons, Zoom, WhatsApp, WeChat).
- We’ve scheduled at least 5 meetings and confirmed the time.
- We’ve marked the agreed meeting dates and time on our calendar.
4. Set Etiquette Expectations
- We’ve agreed to communicate with care and curiosity.
- We’ve acknowledged boundaries around sensitive topics (e.g. politics, religion).
- We’ve discussed how to handle misunderstandings respectfully.
- We’ve agreed to be open-minded and self-aware throughout the exchange.
- We’ve committed to staying present and avoiding multitasking during meetings.
- We know how to seek support if any inappropriate situations arise.
5. Prepare for Each Meeting
- We’ve chosen at least 5 topics as the focus of our upcoming meetings.
- We’ve agreed on ways to bring teaching moments (e.g. useful phrases, discussion questions, photos, interesting videos, short texts).
- We’ve agreed to complete the Post-Meeting Log at the end of each meeting.
- We’ve discussed how to follow up after each session (e.g. quick message, shared notes).
